The Bristol Editors meeting at the watershed in Bristol. FCP X and workflow. No longer hacked to hardware. Why did Apple change. FCP 7 being 12 year old cut. 64 bit architecture etc. Grand Central Dispatch in conjunction with 64 bit and all Ram on the system. HD and 2K with a powerful system with multiple codecs on a time line. Through pretty much anything at it and it will play. FCP X will simply render to Pro Res 422 with out even having to think. Applications and going the XML route to other applications. Go to Da Vinci dissolve. AJA, Black Magic and Matrox offer video output options Excellent FCP X run through. Particularly good for beginners. The Bristol Editors Site : http://wefcpug.blogspot.de/ Thanks to Philip Ashby. Not quite sure why the domain has a .de at the end which usually means germany!!!

Before taking the FCP X plunge it is a good idea to check and see if FCP X will ingest material from your camera.

Here is a list of Cameras that are currently supported!

    http://help.apple.com/finalcutpro/cameras/en/index.html

Up until very recently Canon Cameras such as the EOS C300 were not supported!
Now there are 2 options out there. First off, a third party solution.

    http://pika.dk/?p=406
    From their site :

"So, is this the Holy Grail? The ultimate tool? Nope. Does it work? Absolutely yes. And it’s fast as well. Oh, and did I mention, NO transcoding. Basically, I am rewrapping the original mpeg2 stream in a .mov container that FCPX will play nice with – after which you can have FCPX transcode it if needed. But you have your original yuv422p/50Mbps footage going straight into the belly of FCPX – yummy yummy ;-) It’s all possible only due to the brilliant work of the guys doing the whole FFmpeg open source project. So yeah, don’t thank me – thank them… they did the hard work; my little utility is simply wrapping it in a nice UI that will enable it to be used in a decent workflow for us happy XF100 owners ;-)"

    And a solution from Canon

    http://usa.canon.com/cusa/professional/products/professional_cameras/cinema_eos_cameras/eos_c300#DriversAndSoftware

Note the Canon solution is for Lion only although there is a workaround to get it to work on Leopard.

Storage is the last post frontier in a sense because if you think of the big players they will spend significantly more on there storage than o the editing software as such.

Imagine 10 mac mini lined up all digesting material simultaneously for a film and then editing. This was possible with FCP 7.

One of the mission critical question now is how committed is Apple to getting shared network workflows like this work with FCP X. Because imagine that you had 100 or even 1000 edit systems. The whole sharing thing becomes more and more interesting.

The Motion Template Tool allows to install custom Motion Templates for FCPX in an easy way. This tool is helpful for both developers and users. It provides a simple hassle free way to install custom templates, change some installation settings and make backups of the template installations.

One also can create disk images for backup and/or distribution. The Motion Template Tool is free of charge as long as you use it for distribution of free Motion Templates or for backup purposes. A donation though is appreciated. You freely can distribute or host the installer disk image for free Motion Templates as long the license agreement is supplied and the application is not modified.

People scream for change and cry when they get too much change too soon! He runs through all the stuff his production house are using. FCP 7 and FCP X, Resolve, Smoke and Adobe.

Does an overview of editing systems that have come and gone. Looks at the changing post production hardware landscape. Shift from sheer CPU power to the growing importance of video cards and open CL. The shift to 64 bit. And of course RAM taking advantage of more than 4GB now that most things are 64 bit.

After a wave of revolutions in the world of Print, DTP, Music, Digital Cinema Cameras and Video Post Production the unthinkably is on the verge of happening. The oligopoly world of Digital Cinema Projection is beginning to look threatened.

Digital Cinema Projection has long been the exclusive domain of big players such as Christies Digital Systems (USA), Barco (ASIA) and NEC (Relativly new) who have all licensed DLP Cinema technology from Texas Instruments. And lets not forget the other technology which is made by Sony and is labeled SXRD.

    A Wide World of Film

About 400 films are shown every year as part of the Berlinale's public programme, the vast majority of which are world or European premieres. Films of every genre, length and format can be submitted for consideration. The Berlinale is divided into different sections, each with its own unique profile: big international movies in the Competition, independent and art-house productions in Panorama, movies specially for a young audience in the Generation section, the most exciting German cinema productions in Perspektive Deutsches Kino, an in-depth look at films from “distant” countries and experimental forms in the Forum, as well as an investigation of diverse cinematic possibilities in the Berlinale Shorts. The programme is rounded off by a thematic Retrospective and a Homage, which focuses on the lifework of a great cinema personality. Both of these sections, which are curated by the Berlin Film Museum, aim to place contemporary cinema within a historical context.
The European Film Market (EFM), the film trade fair integrated into the Berlinale has developed into one of the most important events for the international film business. The Berlinale and EFM, the festival and the market, together form a unique network of formal and informal connections. Since 2006, the main venue of the EFM has been the Martin-Gropius-Bau, a prestigious location with charm and character in the immediate vicinity of the festival centre at Potsdamer Platz.

    Showing, enabling, initiating...

The Berlin International Film Festival sees itself as a showcase for what is happening in cinema, but also as an actor and propagator on the international film circuit. Whether through film series, workshops, panels and thematic collaborations with other cultural players - the Berlinale offers countless forms of co-operation and creative interaction.
One of the many fruits of the festival’s cooperative orientation is the Berlinale Talent Campus, which takes place during the festival and is made possible by a broad network of creative partners. The Campus invites about 350 young film talents from around the world to meet with experienced film professionals and personalities for a week of workshops and discussions. This “talent forge” is primarily about the transfer of know-how, teamwork and the exchange of ideas. The Campus is an investment in the future of the festival, but even more so in the future of cinema.

In terms of thematic focal points and forms of presentation, the Berlinale situates itself at the meeting point of the available and the possible. This fundamental openness for new ideas and solutions, for unconventional formats and surprising lateral connections also finds expression in ongoing initiatives that are permanently embedded in the festival. Such as the Berlinale Co-Production Market, which, associated to the European Film Market, provides fruitful territory for international co-productions; or the World Cinema Fund (WCF), a joint initiative with the German Federal Cultural Foundation. The idea and aim of this support mechanism is the realisation of film projects in structurally disadvantaged countries and strengthening their position in the international film industry. The Fund’s activities continue throughout the year and therefore stretch far beyond the festival itself.

    The Berlin Spirit

Artists from around the world are attracted to Berlin and many consider Berlin the unofficial capital of German film. It is home to a rich cinema scene and a diverse, discerning public. Last but not least, Berlin has captured the imagination of countless filmmakers. Over and over again, the city has served as the backdrop for great silver screen productions, often becoming itself the secret protagonist of the movie. Think “film” and “Berlin” is bound to spring to mind. For two weeks every year Berlin is totally enraptured by the Berlinale.

In the first week of February, Berlin's House of World Cultures will play host to transmediale.11 RESPONSE:ABILITY!  Presenting a dynamic programme of cutting edge artworks, breathtaking live performances and leading thinkers from around the world transmediale.11 addresses the ways in which our digital culture is radically redefining our physical presence and the ways in which we interact as interdependent global communities. By looking at the emergent forms of bio-political, economic and affective dimensions of a society increasingly manifesting itself live and online transmediale.11 reaches beyond the Web 2.0 era, examining the Internet in terms of the abilities and potentials available to its users, not only to participate but to actively shape it as contemporary society's central zone of inquiry, creative and cultural development - while pushing the urgent need to defend it from restrictive political and legal intervention.

Manifested  through open studios, challenging workshops and temporary project offices run by leading artists and international experts from the open technology and creative sectors such as Kelly Sutton, Heath Bunting, Mushon Zer-Aviv, Elizabeth Stark, Peter Sunde, MODD_R and the Open Design City transmediale probes and expands our abilities to respond to the volatility and constant flux of digital life. Helping along the way will be Angel_F, the digitally conceived spyware entity born through the technological-sensual relationship between Biodoll and Derrick de Kerckhove.
Joining the BODY:RESPONSE conference renowned speakers, researchers and activists such as BIFO / Franco Berardi, Maurizio Lazzarato, Tim Etchells, Jordan Crandall, Mark Hansen, Carolyn Guertin and Paul Vanouse will be leading a debate into the ways in which we as physical autonomous entities, challenged by the redefinitions of space and an increasing "dematerialisation" through our digital presence ultimately experience space, reality and our digitally extended being.
Daily screenings of curated film and video programmes and a special Sunday matinee featuring an early example of affective cinema, join the week-long programme of inspiring talks, performances, actions and installations by internationally celebrated artists including Les Liens Invisibles, Heather Kelley, Daito Manabe, Ursula Endlicher, ubermorgen.com, Christin Lahr, Evan Roth and the HONF collective from Indonesia. At Test Signals, organised by the trans-national non-profit Sourcefabric, radio-makers and activists will come together in panels and workshops to discuss the future of radio in the digital age.

People who follow this Blog regularly will have noticed a lot of stuff about lightworks. Here is some background information. It is a hard one to pin down. Because it is not being sold as such. Rather given away! And not by some start up company in a garage some where in California rather by a rather large global player called Edit Share.

To understand the story we have to go back to the film editing table and the advent of the first digital non linear systems. Film editing tables were simple. You had rolls of film a screen and a lever a little like an accelerator in a car. The difference being that you could go forwards and backwards with out changing gear. And this insignificant little fact is probably the key to the whole story. Push forwards go forward and pull backwards and go backwards. OK you had to put on the white gloves and pull the film out of the machine, stick it together and push it all back in. Ask any young graduate of one of these media schools that are popping up all over the place what a bin is and they will look at you perplexed!

So along came the first non linear edit systems. The CMX 600

From the Lighworks site. "Back in April 2010, we announced our plans to take Lightworks open source and the first stage in doing that was to make the application freely available. So we are very pleased to reach this first stage and offer a free download of the most intuitive and advanced editor available. Lightworks is an Academy and Emmy award winning professional-grade editor with over 20 years of history in the film and broadcast industry. Having cut hundreds of films such as Pulp Fiction, The Departed, Centurion and Shutter Island, it includes a full feature set of editorial tools, from advanced trimming and media management, through to stereoscopic support and realtime effects including multiple secondary colour correctors. Lightworks has an advanced effects pipeline, utilizing the power of your GPU. And with support for up to 2K workflows with realtime effects, it is the most advanced editing application available."

This one is huge. One of the original and best editing systems of all time is becoming open source! Which means that people get the code and get to develop stuff. Details slightly hazy at present but it looks as if developers then sell back to Edit Share. http://www.editshare.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=164&Itemid=160 http://www.editshare.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=155&Itemid=203 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightworks Lightworks is an all time classics with respect to editing systems. Rock solid editing for the masses! Might just give some of the big players food for thought. Mind bogeling list of features and supported formats :-)

Cory Doctorow with a really nice concise history of copyright wars.

Really impressive is the comparison of Studios producing 30 hours of programming a year whilst the same amount of content is generated on You Tube every minute! Scary to think that the big 5 Studios seriously argue that shutting down You Tube would be a good idea. The reasoning being that it is simply impossible to police! How square is that.

  • Copyright extension for sound recordings

Peter from the Open Rights Group sez, "In 2009 a Directive aimed at extending the term of copyright protection for sound recordings from 50 to 70 years, which flies in the face of all the credible evidence, passed the European Parliament. This week, the plans are back in front of the European Council and may soon become law. But there's a chance we can stop this if we make enough noise. We need people to write to their MEPs and ask them to oppose these plans and make sure the Directive gets properly debated."

I've just written to my MEPs and I'll be calling them tomorrow. We need people from across Europe to do the same if we're going to stop this. There's no credible reason to extend the copyright on works that have already been made; historically this has not enriched artists (there are vanishingly few recordings that are still commercially viable after 50 years), but it has stopped preservationists, fans, and remixers from re-issuing or re-using all those recordings, often to the point where all known copies of the works degrade and disappear.

But isn't making sure artists continue to be paid a good thing?

Last year we had about 60 submissions, this year our goal is 150! Until the end of July, musicians and bands who are releasing their music under a Creative Commons license, can register for the contest. Until August 22th there will be an additional remix-phase: the participating artists are invited to submit single stems or acapellas in addition to the individual songs. By submitting individual tracks or the submission of music videos, the chance to be added onto the sampler that will be a result of the contest, will be increased – if only just a little bit.” Christian sez

Let me come clean here. I worked for a large Start Up Internet Video Company here in Berlin over 3 years ago. At one point we had something like 10 Senior Editors and another 30 or so, Junior and  Toddler editors. Not to mention the 5 edit managers! All sitting in a huge room with headphones and iMacs. A little bit like in a battery egg hen farm.

Beware of a piece of software that declares itself as being YOUR antivirus program!
Sees lots of viruses and tricks you in a worst case scenario into paying money for a program to kill imaginary viruses.

Not directly FCP related but what with Sony also being active in the post production industry. Sony has suffered a number of embarrassing security set backs. What with user passwords being stolen and now LulzSec has hacked the Site argumenting that it was a piece of cake and that Sony deserved being hacked because they were effectively asking for it! Or a kind of backlash for Sony putting root-kits on customers PC?

"Some of you have seen the so called “film burn” (or sometimes called film flash) on different creative pieces. The look typically comes from the misfeed of film through the camera gate behind the lens of a film camera, creating a beautiful but unintended look of red and yellowish hues on the negative and the print. Because of it’s associated look with film it has become a desired stylized look in video. You can pay a lot of ca$h for this look in the form of a plugin or as stock footage. You can pay as much as $199 for a single NTSC clip from Artbeats or $499 for the collection. See it here. But here at digital cinema foundry you get it today for free!" From the Digital Cinema Foundry Site.

For some strange reason people will always try to get there pristine or not so pristine looking digital pictures to look like mishandled film material!!!

A final cut pro tutorial that will teach you how to convert a day filmed scene or shot into an evening or night look. Normally this is done with a filter. This technique is called "Nuit Americaine", but you can also do it in post production.

This tutorial is given by Jordy Vandeput from YapperDesign.com

So what with FCP X and all the buzz, there will be a lot of people looking at switching.

FCP X is so cheap that I can imagine a lot of Avid users buying it just to try it out.

And now FCP users save 60% if they buy Avid.

Another nail in the coffin of computers as we know them!!! Or another break through for the touch screen revolution. Depending on how you want to look at it.

Last month we had Avid Studio for the iPad. Now we have one of the old post production staples. Photoshop Touch for the iPad! Almost sounds like an invention from Apple. Obviously it is only a matter of time till we have FCP X for the iPad!

On a side note when you read the license agreements for Adobe they do mention that they can "change or discontinuation without notice" Does this mean that they can pull the plug in the middle of a project. Our tool goes dead? How do we reanimate our project? So here is the official line....
